You do not need to be a technician. You need to know enough to ask the right question and notice when the answer does not match what you see. A heavy bedroom slide on a Class A that the seller claims is "just a little electric motor" is worth a second look.
The Operating Test: Run It, Watch It, Listen To It
This is the heart of the inspection. Do it before you fall in love with the kitchen.
- Confirm power and level first. Slides draw a lot of current. Make sure the RV is on shore power or has a strong battery, and that it is reasonably level. A slide tested on a steep slope can bind and mislead you in both directions.
- Clear the path. Move anything inside that could block the room, and check outside for the awning, ladder, or a low branch.
- Run it fully in, then fully out, three times. Watch the room, not the seller. It should move at a steady, even pace with no jerking, no pausing, and no shuddering.
- Listen. A healthy slide hums or whirs steadily. Grinding, clicking, squealing, or a motor that strains and slows means the mechanism is fighting something. A loud thunk at the end of travel can be normal seating or can be a worn stop. Ask.
- Watch for racking. Racking is when one side of the room leads the other so the slide goes in crooked. Even a half-inch of lean front-to-back means the sync is off, and on Schwintek slides that is a known and expensive headache.
- Check the seal at full extension. When the room is out, the inner wipe seals should sit flush all the way around. Gaps at the corners are where water sneaks in.
- Run it back in and feel the inside seal. With the room in, the outer seal should hug the sidewall evenly with no bunched or folded sections.

Reading the Seals Like a Pro
Seals are cheap insurance and the first thing to dry out. There are usually two kinds: bulb seals (the fat rubber tube that compresses when the room is in) and wipe seals (the flat flap that drags against the room as it moves). Both fail from UV, age, and neglect.
Get up close, ideally with a flashlight and a phone for photos. Run your finger along the rubber.
- Cracking or chalking. Surface checking is normal at five-plus years. Deep cracks that go through the rubber are not, and they leak.
- Hard, shiny, or flat spots. Healthy seal rubber is soft and springs back. Rubber that feels like a hockey puck has lost its seal and lets water wick in.
- Tears, gaps, or missing chunks. Especially at corners and at the bottom where water pools. Any visible daylight through a closed seal is a leak.
- Black streaks below the slide on the exterior. This is the seal shedding and water tracking down. It also hints at how often the seller cleaned and conditioned things.
- A musty smell inside near the slide. Trust your nose. Damp, mildew, or that classic "old camper" smell near a slide often means the seal has been losing for a while.
Seals that are simply dry can be conditioned. Seals that are cracked through, torn, or hardened need replacement, and that is a fair negotiating point, not a deal killer on its own. The deal killer is what the water already did, which is the next section.
Follow the Water: Floor, Ceiling, and Walls Around the Slide
A slide-out is the most common entry point for the damage that quietly destroys RVs. Inspect the consequences, not just the seal.
Under and around the slide floor. With the room out, press firmly with your thumb on the floor where the slide meets the main floor, along the whole seam. It should feel solid. Any sponginess, give, or soft spot means the subfloor is wet or rotting. Do the same on the floor of the slide itself. Soft floor here is expensive and common. See soft floor signs.
The slide ceiling and top corners. Look up at the top of the slide opening and the ceiling of the room. Water stains, bubbling, discoloration, or a wavy ceiling panel point to a top-seal leak. On the roof side, this connects to roof leak signs.
Sidewalls beside the slide. Run your hand along the interior walls flanking the opening. Bubbling wallpaper, soft paneling, or a swollen look near the floor is water that came through the seal. On the exterior, the same water can cause delamination, where the fiberglass skin separates and ripples.
The slide box floor underside, if you can see it. On many trailers and fifth wheels you can look up under the extended slide. Stains, sagging, or daylight are all bad.
Bring a cheap moisture meter (around $20 to $40) if you can. Readings above roughly 16 to 20 percent in wood around the slide suggest active or recent moisture. Verify against a known-dry spot on the same unit, because meters read relative.
What To Ask The Seller
Honest answers and matching paperwork beat a clean-looking slide every time. Ask these plainly:
- "When did you last replace or condition the slide seals?" A seller who conditions seals seasonally is a seller who cared.
- "Has this slide ever stuck, racked, or needed a manual override?" Listen for hesitation.
- "Has the slide motor, gears, cables, or hydraulic pump ever been serviced or replaced?" Ask for receipts.
- "Has there ever been any water intrusion or floor repair near the slide?" Cross-check against what your hands and nose found.
- "Can I run it in and out a few times myself?" A confident yes is a good sign.
- "Where is the manual override, and can you show me it works?" Every slide has one for power failures, and knowing where it is matters.

- A slide that will not move and the seller cannot explain why. You may be buying a $2,000 surprise.
- Visible racking that the seller shrugs off. Sync repairs on in-wall slides are stubborn and costly.
- Soft, spongy floor at the slide seam. This is rot, and it spreads.
- Water stains on the ceiling or swollen walls beside the slide. The seal already failed and the damage is done.
- Delamination on the exterior near the slide. The skin is separating, and that rarely gets cheaper.
- A seller who refuses to operate the slide at all. No demonstration, no deal.
