Three things determine how a rig handles wind, and you can verify all of them used:
- Tongue weight percentage. For a travel trailer, you want 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight on the tongue. Too little, and the trailer wags the tow vehicle. This is the single biggest controllable sway factor.
- Weight distribution and sway control hardware. A proper weight-distribution hitch with integrated sway control (or a dedicated sway bar) is not optional for a tall travel trailer. Ask if it is included in the sale.
- Tow vehicle wheelbase. Longer is more stable. A short SUV pulling a long trailer in wind is fighting itself.
If the seller is including a hitch, get the brand and model, confirm the spring bars match the tongue weight, and factor a setup or adjustment at a hitch shop. Brakes: the part everyone forgets until the grade
Going up tests your engine. Coming down tests your brakes, and that is where people get hurt. - "Has this been towed in the mountains, and did the transmission ever overheat?"

Walk away, or price the repair in hard, if:
- Trailer tires are over 7 years old and the seller calls them "fine" (a tell about everything else)
